2017-04-11ACPI / PNP: Reserve ACPI resources at the fs_initcall_sync stageRafael J. Wysocki

This effectively reverts the following three commits: 7bc10388ccdd ACPI / resources: free memory on error in add_region_before() 0f1b414d1907 ACPI / PNP: Avoid conflicting resource reservations b9a5e5e18fbf ACPI / init: Fix the ordering of acpi_reserve_resources() (commit b9a5e5e18fbf introduced regressions some of which, but not all, were addressed by commit 0f1b414d1907 and commit 7bc10388ccdd was a fixup on top of the latter) and causes ACPI fixed hardware resources to be reserved at the fs_initcall_sync stage of system initialization. The story is as follows. First, a boot regression was reported due to an apparent resource reservation ordering change after a commit that shouldn't lead to such changes. Investigation led to the conclusion that the problem happened because acpi_reserve_resources() was executed at the device_initcall() stage of system initialization which wasn't strictly ordered with respect to driver initialization (and with respect to the initialization of the pcieport driver in particular), so a random change causing the device initcalls to be run in a different order might break things. The response to that was to attempt to run acpi_reserve_resources() as soon as we knew that ACPI would be in use (commit b9a5e5e18fbf). However, that turned out to be too early, because it caused resource reservations made by the PNP system driver to fail on at least one system and that failure was addressed by commit 0f1b414d1907. That fix still turned out to be insufficient, though, because calling acpi_reserve_resources() before the fs_initcall stage of system initialization caused a boot regression to happen on the eCAFE EC-800-H20G/S netbook. That meant that we only could call acpi_reserve_resources() at the fs_initcall initialization stage or later, but then we might just as well call it after the PNP initalization in which case commit 0f1b414d1907 wouldn't be necessary any more. For this reason, the changes made by commit 0f1b414d1907 are reverted (along with a memory leak fixup on top of that commit), the changes made by commit b9a5e5e18fbf that went too far are reverted too and acpi_reserve_resources() is changed into fs_initcall_sync, which will cause it to be executed after the PNP subsystem initialization (which is an fs_initcall) and before device initcalls (including the pcieport driver initialization) which should avoid the initial issue. Commit b9a5e5e18fbf "ACPI / init: Fix the ordering of acpi_reserve_resources()" overlooked the fact that the memory and/or I/O regions reserved by acpi_reserve_resources() may conflict with those reserved by the PNP "system" driver. If that conflict actually takes place, it causes the reservations made by the "system" driver to fail while before commit b9a5e5e18fbf all reservations made by it and by acpi_reserve_resources() would be successful. In turn, that allows the resources that haven't been reserved by the "system" driver to be used by others (e.g. PCI) which sometimes leads to functional problems (up to and including boot failures). To fix that issue, introduce a common resource reservation routine, acpi_reserve_region(), to be used by both acpi_reserve_resources() and the "system" driver, that will track all resources reserved by it and avoid making conflicting requests. 2017-04-10KVM: kvm_io_bus_unregister_dev() should never failDavid Hildenbrand
commit 90db10434b163e46da413d34db8d0e77404cc645 upstream. No caller currently checks the return value of kvm_io_bus_unregister_dev(). This is evil, as all callers silently go on freeing their device. A stale reference will remain in the io_bus, getting at least used again, when the iobus gets teared down on kvm_destroy_vm() - leading to use after free errors. There is nothing the callers could do, except retrying over and over again. So let's simply remove the bus altogether, print an error and make sure no one can access this broken bus again (returning -ENOMEM on any attempt to access it). 2017-04-07usb-core: Add LINEAR_FRAME_INTR_BINTERVAL USB quirkSamuel Thibault
commit 3243367b209faed5c320a4e5f9a565ee2a2ba958 upstream. Some USB 2.0 devices erroneously report millisecond values in bInterval. The generic config code manages to catch most of them, but in some cases it's not completely enough. The case at stake here is a USB 2.0 braille device, which wants to announce 10ms and thus sets bInterval to 10, but with the USB 2.0 computation that yields to 64ms. It happens that one can type fast enough to reach this interval and get the device buffers overflown, leading to problematic latencies. The generic config code does not catch this case because the 64ms is considered a sane enough value. This change thus adds a USB_QUIRK_LINEAR_FRAME_INTR_BINTERVAL quirk to mark devices which actually report milliseconds in bInterval, and marks Vario Ultra devices as needing it. 2017-03-28give up on gcc ilog2() constant optimizationsLinus Torvalds
commit 474c90156c8dcc2fa815e6716cc9394d7930cb9c upstream. gcc-7 has an "optimization" pass that completely screws up, and generates the code expansion for the (impossible) case of calling ilog2() with a zero constant, even when the code gcc compiles does not actually have a zero constant. And we try to generate a compile-time error for anybody doing ilog2() on a constant where that doesn't make sense (be it zero or negative). So now gcc7 will fail the build due to our sanity checking, because it created that constant-zero case that didn't actually exist in the source code. There's a whole long discussion on the kernel mailing about how to work around this gcc bug. The gcc people themselevs have discussed their "feature" in https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=72785 but it's all water under the bridge, because while it looked at one point like it would be solved by the time gcc7 was released, that was not to be. So now we have to deal with this compiler braindamage. And the only simple approach seems to be to just delete the code that tries to warn about bad uses of ilog2(). So now "ilog2()" will just return 0 not just for the value 1, but for any non-positive value too. It's not like I can recall anybody having ever actually tried to use this function on any invalid value, but maybe the sanity check just meant that such code never made it out in public. 2017-02-15nfs: Don't increment lock sequence ID after NFS4ERR_MOVEDChuck Lever
commit 059aa734824165507c65fd30a55ff000afd14983 upstream. Xuan Qi reports that the Linux NFSv4 client failed to lock a file that was migrated. The steps he observed on the wire: 1. The client sent a LOCK request to the source server 2. The source server replied NFS4ERR_MOVED 3. The client switched to the destination server 4. The client sent the same LOCK request to the destination server with a bumped lock sequence ID 5. The destination server rejected the LOCK request with NFS4ERR_BAD_SEQID RFC 3530 section 8.1.5 provides a list of NFS errors which do not bump a lock sequence ID. However, RFC 3530 is now obsoleted by RFC 7530. In RFC 7530 section 9.1.7, this list has been updated by the addition of NFS4ERR_MOVED. 2017-01-27posix_acl: Clear SGID bit when setting file permissionsJan Kara

When file permissions are modified via chmod(2) and the user is not in the owning group or capable of CAP_FSETID, the setgid bit is cleared in inode_change_ok(). Setting a POSIX ACL via setxattr(2) sets the file permissions as well as the new ACL, but doesn't clear the setgid bit in a similar way; this allows to bypass the check in chmod(2). Fix that. 2017-01-26gro: Disable frag0 optimization on IPv6 ext headersHerbert Xu
[ Upstream commit 57ea52a865144aedbcd619ee0081155e658b6f7d ] The GRO fast path caches the frag0 address. This address becomes invalid if frag0 is modified by pskb_may_pull or its variants. So whenever that happens we must disable the frag0 optimization. This is usually done through the combination of gro_header_hard and gro_header_slow, however, the IPv6 extension header path did the pulling directly and would continue to use the GRO fast path incorrectly. This patch fixes it by disabling the fast path when we enter the IPv6 extension header path. The current_user_ns() macro currently returns &init_user_ns when user namespaces are disabled, and that causes several warnings when building with gcc-6.0 in code that compares the result of the macro to &init_user_ns itself: fs/xfs/xfs_ioctl.c: In function 'xfs_ioctl_setattr_check_projid': fs/xfs/xfs_ioctl.c:1249:22: error: self-comparison always evaluates to true [-Werror=tautological-compare] if (current_user_ns() == &init_user_ns) This is a legitimate warning in principle, but here it isn't really helpful, so I'm reprasing the definition in a way that shuts up the warning. Apparently gcc only warns when comparing identical literals, but it can figure out that the result of an inline function can be identical to a constant expression in order to optimize a condition yet not warn about the fact that the condition is known at compile time. This is exactly what we want here, and it looks reasonable because we generally prefer inline functions over macros anyway. 2016-11-28perf: Tighten (and fix) the grouping conditionPeter Zijlstra

The fix from 9fc81d87420d ("perf: Fix events installation during moving group") was incomplete in that it failed to recognise that creating a group with events for different CPUs is semantically broken -- they cannot be co-scheduled. Furthermore, it leads to real breakage where, when we create an event for CPU Y and then migrate it to form a group on CPU X, the code gets confused where the counter is programmed -- triggered in practice as well by me via the perf fuzzer. Fix this by tightening the rules for creating groups. Only allow grouping of counters that can be co-scheduled in the same context. This means for the same task and/or the same cpu. [ Upstream commit ac6e780070e30e4c35bd395acfe9191e6268bdd3 ] With syzkaller help, Marco Grassi found a bug in TCP stack, crashing in tcp_collapse() Root cause is that sk_filter() can truncate the incoming skb, but TCP stack was not really expecting this to happen. It probably was expecting a simple DROP or ACCEPT behavior. We first need to make sure no part of TCP header could be removed. 2016-11-08ipc/sem.c: fix complex_count vs. simple op raceManfred Spraul
commit 5864a2fd3088db73d47942370d0f7210a807b9bc upstream. Commit 6d07b68ce16a ("ipc/sem.c: optimize sem_lock()") introduced a race: sem_lock has a fast path that allows parallel simple operations. There are two reasons why a simple operation cannot run in parallel: - a non-simple operations is ongoing (sma->sem_perm.lock held) - a complex operation is sleeping (sma->complex_count != 0) As both facts are stored independently, a thread can bypass the current checks by sleeping in the right positions. See below for more details (or kernel bugzilla 105651). The patch fixes that by creating one variable (complex_mode) that tracks both reasons why parallel operations are not possible. The patch also updates stale documentation regarding the locking. With regards to stable kernels: The patch is required for all kernels that include the commit 6d07b68ce16a ("ipc/sem.c: optimize sem_lock()") (3.10?) The alternative is to revert the patch that introduced the race. The patch is safe for backporting, i.e. it makes no assumptions about memory barriers in spin_unlock_wait(). Background: Here is the race of the current implementation: Thread A: (simple op) - does the first "sma->complex_count == 0" test Thread B: (complex op) - does sem_lock(): This includes an array scan. commit 536fa402221f09633e7c5801b327055ab716a363 upstream. CPUs without single-byte and double-byte loads and stores place some "interesting" requirements on concurrent code. For example (adapted from Peter Hurley's test code), suppose we have the following structure: struct foo { spinlock_t lock1; spinlock_t lock2; char a; /* Protected by lock1. */ char b; /* Protected by lock2. */ }; struct foo *foop; Of course, it is common (and good) practice to place data protected by different locks in separate cache lines. However, if the locks are rarely acquired (for example, only in rare error cases), and there are a great many instances of the data structure, then memory footprint can trump false-sharing concerns, so that it can be better to place them in the same cache cache line as above. But if the CPU does not support single-byte loads and stores, a store to foop->a will do a non-atomic read-modify-write operation on foop->b, which will come as a nasty surprise to someone holding foop->lock2. So we now require CPUs to support single-byte and double-byte loads and stores. 2016-10-20mm: remove gup_flags FOLL_WRITE games from __get_user_pages()Linus Torvalds

This is an ancient bug that was actually attempted to be fixed once (badly) by me eleven years ago in commit 4ceb5db9757a ("Fix get_user_pages() race for write access") but that was then undone due to problems on s390 by commit f33ea7f404e5 ("fix get_user_pages bug"). In the meantime, the s390 situation has long been fixed, and we can now fix it by checking the pte_dirty() bit properly (and do it better). The s390 dirty bit was implemented in abf09bed3cce ("s390/mm: implement software dirty bits") which made it into v3.9. Earlier kernels will have to look at the page state itself. Also, the VM has become more scalable, and what used a purely theoretical race back then has become easier to trigger. To fix it, we introduce a new internal FOLL_COW flag to mark the "yes, we already did a COW" rather than play racy games with FOLL_WRITE that is very fundamental, and then use the pte dirty flag to validate that the FOLL_COW flag is still valid. A timer was used to restart after the bus-off state, leading to a relatively large can_restart() executed in an interrupt context, which in turn sets up pinctrl. When this happens during system boot, there is a high probability of grabbing the pinctrl_list_mutex, which is locked already by the probe() of other device, making the kernel suspect a deadlock condition [1]. To resolve this issue, the restart_timer is replaced by a delayed work. Switching iov_iter fault-in to multipages variants has exposed an old bug in underlying fault_in_multipages_...(); they break if the range passed to them wraps around. Normally access_ok() done by callers will prevent such (and it's a guaranteed EFAULT - ERR_PTR() values fall into such a range and they should not point to any valid objects). However, on architectures where userland and kernel live in different MMU contexts (e.g. s390) access_ok() is a no-op and on those a range with a wraparound can reach fault_in_multipages_...(). In this case when the notifier call-chain sends notifications, the bond_netdev_event() assumes that the rx_handler /rx_handler_data is registered while the bond_enslave() hasn't progressed far enough to register rx_handler for the new slave. This patch adds a rx_handler check that can be performed right at the beginning of the enslave code to avoid getting into this situation. 2016-08-19random32: add prandom_u32_max and convert open coded usersDaniel Borkmann

Under the assumption that we have a PRNG such as taus113 with being well distributed in [0, ~0U] space, we can implement such a function as uword t = (n*m')>>32, where m' is a random number obtained from PRNG, n the right open interval border and t our resulting random number, with n,m',t in u32 universe. Lets go with Joe and simply call it prandom_u32_max(), although technically we have an right open interval endpoint, but that we have documented. Other users can further be migrated to the new prandom_u32_max() function later on; for now, we need to make sure to migrate reciprocal_divide() users for the reciprocal_divide() follow-up fixup since their function signatures are going to change. The dummy ruleset I used to test the original validation change was broken, most rules were unreachable and were not tested by mark_source_chains(). After this change ruleset restore times get again close to what one gets when reverting 36472341017529e (~3 seconds on my workstation). 2016-07-21printk: do cond_resched() between lines while outputting to consolesTejun Heo
commit 8d91f8b15361dfb438ab6eb3b319e2ded43458ff upstream. @console_may_schedule tracks whether console_sem was acquired through lock or trylock. If the former, we're inside a sleepable context and console_conditional_schedule() performs cond_resched(). This allows console drivers which use console_lock for synchronization to yield while performing time-consuming operations such as scrolling. However, the actual console outputting is performed while holding irq-safe logbuf_lock, so console_unlock() clears @console_may_schedule before starting outputting lines. Also, only a few drivers call console_conditional_schedule() to begin with. This means that when a lot of lines need to be output by console_unlock(), for example on a console registration, the task doing console_unlock() may not yield for a long time on a non-preemptible kernel. If this happens with a slow console devices, for example a serial console, the outputting task may occupy the cpu for a very long time. Long enough to trigger softlockup and/or RCU stall warnings, which in turn pile more messages, sometimes enough to trigger the next cycle of warnings incapacitating the system. Fix it by making console_unlock() insert cond_resched() between lines if @console_may_schedule. These errors can be ignored, so firmware usually clears them before the OS enumerates devices. However, firmware is not involved when devices are added via hotplug, so the OS may discover power-up errors that should be ignored. The same may happen when powering up devices when resuming after suspend. Clear the AER error status registers during enumeration and resume. commit d6d86c0a7f8ddc5b38cf089222cb1d9540762dc2 upstream. Sasha Levin reported KASAN splash inside isolate_migratepages_range(). Problem is in the function __is_movable_balloon_page() which tests AS_BALLOON_MAP in page->mapping->flags. This function has no protection against anonymous pages. As result it tried to check address space flags inside struct anon_vma. Further investigation shows more problems in current implementation: * Special branch in __unmap_and_move() never works: balloon_page_movable() checks page flags and page_count. In __unmap_and_move() page is locked, reference counter is elevated, thus balloon_page_movable() always fails. As a result execution goes to the normal migration path. virtballoon_migratepage() returns MIGRATEPAGE_BALLOON_SUCCESS instead of MIGRATEPAGE_SUCCESS, move_to_new_page() thinks this is an error code and assigns newpage->mapping to NULL. Newly migrated page lose connectivity with balloon an all ability for further migration. * lru_lock erroneously required in isolate_migratepages_range() for isolation ballooned page. This function releases lru_lock periodically, this makes migration mostly impossible for some pages. * balloon_page_dequeue have a tight race with balloon_page_isolate: balloon_page_isolate could be executed in parallel with dequeue between picking page from list and locking page_lock. Race is rare because they use trylock_page() for locking. This patch fixes all of them. Instead of fake mapping with special flag this patch uses special state of page->_mapcount: PAGE_BALLOON_MAPCOUNT_VALUE = -256. Buddy allocator uses PAGE_BUDDY_MAPCOUNT_VALUE = -128 for similar purpose. Storing mark directly in struct page makes everything safer and easier. PagePrivate is used to mark pages present in page list (i.e. not isolated, like PageLRU for normal pages). It replaces special rules for reference counter and makes balloon migration similar to migration of normal pages. This flag is protected by page_lock together with link to the balloon device. [js] backport to 3.12. MIGRATEPAGE_BALLOON_SUCCESS had to be removed from one more place. VM_BUG_ON_PAGE does not exist in 3.12 yet, use plain VM_BUG_ON.
